When they ransacked the Mosul Museum in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2015, fighters with ISIS destroyed the Lion of Mosul, a 3,000-year-old Assyrian statue. The lion had once guarded the Temple of Ishtar at Nippur. In 2019, the statue was resurrected—through image sharing and 3D printing. Those with photos of the lion before its destruction shared them. Then Google Arts and Culture and Rekrei (a crowdsourced project that collects photos of damaged cultural heritage objects and makes 3D representations of them) created a 3D model of the lion.
