50 Years Flashback: 2004: Mazar’s Magnificent Monastery

In “Temple Mount Excavations Unearth the Monastery of the Virgins” (May/June 2004), the late archaeologist Eilat Mazar, grand-daughter of Benjamin Mazar, identified one of the Ophel’s best preserved Byzantine structures as an early Christian monastery. The issue’s cover showcased one of the building’s many remarkable finds, a bronze door knocker in the shape of a cross.
